"I have been where you are now; I know how it feels to suffer from gut issues and hormonal changes, and all you want is to just get back to feeling “yourself” again".
Where it all started
My passion for nutrition started in my early 20’s following a long term course of antibiotics for acne. Although, at the time I had no idea the damage this was doing to my gut and the symptoms that would follow. I started to notice that I could no longer tolerate wheat, I ballooned after most foods and I was bloated, I was in pain, and worst of all I looked 6 months pregnant. I also started to suffer from constipation, which only made things worse. I drank heavily during my 20’s and weekend binge drinking just fueled the pain and bloating. I explored options with my GP who told me to eat more fruit and packed me off with a prescription for a fibre drink, but this just aggravated my symptoms. I knew something had to change!
The turning point for me was after seeing an advert in my local health food shop, so I made an appointment to see a kinesiologist, and she sent me off with dietary changes and a range of supplements and I slowly began to feel better.
This inspired me and I started to do my own research. I learned that diet and lifestyle play an influential part and it was possible to improve the way I felt. I was fascinated about the power of nutrition and the impact on the body, I was hooked I just wanted to know more!
Understanding my symptoms
Years later, I followed my dream and decided to change my career in my 30’s and retrained as a Nutritional Therapist at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in Bristol. However, the stress and pressure of juggling college, working, planning my wedding and trying to hold down a social life had started to take its toll. My stress levels were at an all time high and I was at an all time low. I suffered increasing low moods and erratic mood swings, and insomnia, which left me exhausted the following day and the cycle continued.
During this time my PMT increased, I felt moody, snappy, tearful for no reason and my libido disappeared, I felt dreadful, drained and I hated the way I felt.
My whole work/life balance was skewed, my stressful life left me too tired to socialise, I didn’t want to go out, I just couldn't be bothered, I felt boring, and this affected my relationships with loved ones.
Getting the right results!
Fortunately for me, when I qualified I had the skills, knowledge, and understanding of how my hormones work and how things can go wrong when they are out of balance. I knew that chronic stress was one of the main drivers, causing my system to become out of whack.
Armed with my knowledge, I knew where to start, so I carried out a comprehensive hormone panel, thyroid test, and some blood tests to check for certain vitamins and minerals, with a private laboratory that nutritionists are able to work with. This gave me an overview of my levels of hormones, which were unbalanced and this was the foundation for the road of my recovery.
Through a combination of simple changes to my diet and lifestyle, getting a grip on my stress level and taking appropriate supplements I managed to change the way I felt. I quickly began to notice the mood swings reduced, I felt calmer, my sleep improved and I woke up feeling refreshed. I began to feel myself again and my confidence levels increased, I was feeling great.
By knowing how to bring harmony to my hormones does not mean that I am now “magically fixed”, I am not perfect I have to be mindful of my stress levels, and I know what foods to enjoy and what ones to avoid, the beauty of this is that I understand what my body wants and not necessarily what my body needs and I can help you achieve the same.
I can help you too!
I believe that women today are looking for natural and holistic ways to improve their health and wellbeing. I am here to show you that it is possible for women to age gracefully, despite changes with hormones, to understand that there is a way to make the transition into menopause an easier one.
What I learned in college has helped transform my life, bringing back harmony and balance, with my knowledge and understanding let me help transform yours too.
Please believe in yourself, you can do it, these subtle changes can be made and it really is achievable.
I run my clinic from my beautiful garden office, built by my husband especially for my practice, and which I have aptly called "The Garden Room". I wanted to provide a welcoming area without a desk, I wanted something informal, so that that I can hold my clinic sessions in a comfortable area with warm neutral shade.
I am a member of the British Association for Nutritional Therapy (BANT) and I am also registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).
You can do this!
